Team A is up 6-5, is in the field with 2 outs and time is expired. Runner on 3rd base for Team B with their number 4 hitter at the plate. Game is finish the batter… Multiple college coaches watching…
What happens here?
If you guessed Team A’s coach played the clock game to get to this point you would be correct. If you guessed Team A’s coach told her pitcher to walk the batter you would be correct. And if you guessed Team B’s number 4 hitter swung at two pitches over her head to try to make something happen you would also be correct.
The game ended with Team B’s number 4 hitter flying out on a pitch two feet over her head to the shortstop who collided with the 3rd baseman and almost dropped the ball.
A few concerns:
1- it’s a showcase, Team A’s coach played for the win and robbed the pitcher and hitter of a chance to showcase their skills. They did win the game.
2- What message does that send to Team A’s pitcher, players, and parents? Is it positive or negative?
3- How was the final play scored by Team B in GC? Do you record the actual out because that’s what happened, or do you leave it empty so it doesn’t affect DD tourney average?
In my humble opinion, for finish the batter showcase games if coaches choose to walk the final batter another batter should be able to come to bat. The game should end on an out or a hit, but never a walk. At the end of the day it is about showcasing the players you are hoping to move to the next level.
In my 25 years of travel ball I can now say I’ve seen it all… until next week
