Parents matter. They take a ton of heat from parents reaching out to AD's and want to know what their behavior is prior to recruiting. Like she said, "Rockstars will always get picked up, but if it comes down to your kid and a like talent you may be the difference." They watch you, listen to you, stalk your social media, talk to parents and competing coaches, and especially watch at camps.
Habits matter. A huge portion of your college career will be spent conditioning and practicing. They watch you warm up and will ask innocent questions about your off-field practice habits and they take the answers and eye test seriously. How you handle high school matters. You may be on less than competitive teams in college and how/what you say about your high school experience is indicative of how you will handle less than perfect situations. How you fail matters .. a lot.
Academics Matter. At their program, they don't limit kids on their academic path, so they want to make sure kids are up to the challenge. One of the biggest off-field factors that can get a coach fired is team academic failure. Make sure you can articulate an academic plan and have shown a consistent willingness to prioritize academics. You don't have to be a genius at a mid-level state school to succeed, and you'll be given every assistance needed, but you have to get the work done. Any hint that you won't will work against you.
For her, where you play matters. They want to see you compete against the players you'll see in college .. or better. It doesn't have to be national travel, but for a mid-major it's all PGF / Alliance competition.
