Yes, this does happen and from a coaches perspective, do you address this with parents, or try to let them figure it out on their own? A good coach would have that hard conversation with the parent so that they are left to guess, if they really aren’t being realistic of their own child’s level. Having that conversation allows a family to make a choice on what is best for the kid. If they aren’t realistic about their own kids level of talent, they might just need to be told. Is this the role of the coach? Should parents be left to guess and assume? This also opens an entire other side to this conversation- what if the coaches kid is on the lower end of the talent pool of the team? Who addresses that? What if the coach cannot evaluate their own child’s talent level? It would be hard to take their word when their kid falls into this category. I know that was not your point, but as a parent, what does one do about this?
