As an umpire, I find the craziest levels of softball are 10U and 12U. 10U - people don't understand the rules quite frequently and also expect a tight zone for their hitters and a loose zone for their pitchers. Parents are generally living and dying on every pitch. As for 12U, the competitive increases all around, parents screaming, coaches bitching. Those levels unfortunately are where new umpires typically get but usually require someone more seasoned to keep the noise down. By the time most solid teams are getting to 14 and beyond, the noise decreases but that's also where the experienced umpires are.
