I've had two children play in college, one P5 and one mid-major. At both programs, players saw playing time based on a combination of factors: potential talent, on-field results, beating out other players at practice, conditioning effort, and not being a toxic teammate.
Keep telling your kids they're owed time on the field. My kids have played, my kids have sat it was part of the game. A college coach's job is to try to replace every player in the lineup with better, stronger, faster players every recruiting year.
