This is my thought and I have no proof. Patrick Mahomes is the 14th highest paid QB in the NFL. The Chiefs are donating money to Texas Tech because Patrick Mahomes is underpaid in comparison to other QB's in the NFL. In my head this is way for the Chiefs to give more money to Patrick Mahomes and avoid impact towards the NFL's salary cap.
