There's a particular species of hypocrisy that lives in the bleachers of travel softball, and it wears a team hoodie. It's the parent who spent all fall preaching "compete, work hard, earn your spot", right up until another girl earned it. Then the language changes. Suddenly the kid hitting .450 is "only up there because of her dad's connections." The girl who got the college look is "not that fast, she just had the right showcase." The pitcher throwing 62 is "going to blow her arm out by sixteen." None of it is analysis; it's grief in costume. What they're actually saying is that their daughter didn't get what they'd already spent thousands of dollars and a hundred weekends imagining she would, and rather than sit with that, they take it out on a fourteen-year-old who did nothing but get better. The cruelty of it is that these are the same parents who demand their own kid be judged on merit and effort, who bristle at any suggestion that she got a break; they want a meritocracy right up until the meritocracy returns a verdict they don't like. And the girls hear all of it. They learn, from the adults who claim to be teaching them character, that other people's success is a threat to be neutralized, not a standard to chase. That's the real cost. Not the hurt feelings of one family, but a whole dugout of kids quietly taught that the way to handle being outplayed is to look for the asterisk.
