Five Year Eligibility

For f's sake, how long do they need to be in college? It was never meant to be a career.

This has already been here due to covid year you had players in there mid 20s playing going on 6 yrs or even more

This is hard to get our heads around because it’s so new and it’s so different. It feels so unnatural.

But we’re entering a Great New Era for semi-pro athletics.

These aren’t scholarships, they’re contracts. The kids might take classes, but they aren’t student athletes.

Some kids go to trade schools. Others the military. Others become college students. In today’s landscape… some fortunate softball players have the chance to be semi-pro athletes at age 18.

That’s not necessarily good or bad… but it’s different!

I’m confident we’re headed toward a full semi-pro future. Schools (or their teams’ PE owners) will offer contracts regardless of age or enrollment status. Think of the 1940s/50s Brakettes - but a modern variation.

Boys have been doing this with the minor leagues (entering out of HS and getting paid), and we don’t poo pop those who don’t make it to the majors or get a degree. They are chasing their dream and getting a paycheck.

Would be good if they leveled the playing field and just made everyone eligible for 5 years regardless of playing status. Currently, with all the red-shirt manipulations, kids are staying eligible for much more than 5 years.

While I do agree with female athletes getting as much as they can, there are so few schools that can fund all of these "advantages." It's just stretching out the gap between the haves and the have nots. Parity is not going to be a thing in softball.

The only question is who's going to lose to OU in the WCWS.

In every conference, there are teams that have resources and those that do not. For 99% of the players, the NCAA Championship isn't the ultimate goal; instead, it's about winning their conference, like the MVC or Horizon, and earning a chance to compete in the tournament. There's an OU in every conference, and these rules make it easier for them to dominate.

They are talking about not counting JUCO years in NCAA eligibility. So you figure a player does 2 years JUCO,goes to a D1 program and red shirts first year, plays out the next 4 at the same university and earns a 5th year eligibility, they could be playing for 8 years. Hell, throw in a medical they could play 9.
