HS Awards

The Marist head coach getting a “coach of the year” award is like a coach getting an award for coaching an all-star team. Every year she gets handed Bandits and Chill players as those parents drive from counties away to the “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” program.
She rolls out some balls and writes a line-up card and usually heads down state.

It is a bit disappointing that the Marist coach got this award. For comparison, I know that the Oswego HS varsity team (currently 36-2 and going to state in 4A) has 2 of their former players who after playing college ball, came back into the program and coached varsity the last 2 years. While the older male is listed as the "head coach" (who is retiring after this season), in reality these two 23 / 24 year olds who really guided the Oswego team to their state births these last 2 years. They do the majority of the field strategy, call pitches, and talk to and mentor the players. This a a really good story for these former players coming back to their community high school, using their college experiences, and guiding their players to a very successful season. And I know that these 2 players also asked another former Oswego HS player and D1 player to come and help coach next year. And, the JV and Freshman teams also have former Oswego HS players as coaches who played and excelled in college and come back into the HS program (same age 23 & 24). Personally, I think that is pretty awesome story.

Great story, and they are doing an excellent job over there. The Wheaton North coach got it over Oswego coach though. It’s a sectional coach of year award that is awarded from state.

If you think it's a piece of cake to coach a bunch of Bandit, Chill, IMG, etc. players, and all you have to do is fill out the lineup card, you obviously haven't been watching Lake Central the last four years.

Coaches matter, whether you want to hear it or not.

There is no way I'm sending my kid miles away to Marist and sitting through 30 something games a year of mostly inferior opponents just to say you won a state title. That has to be brutal to watch up until playoff time. We'll stick it out in the tough conference we're in and most likely we won't get near a championship but we're going up against tough competition throughout the season. That's what is more important.

Coach Colleen, a former Marist player and D1 softball player along with her two coaches that were also D1 players do a terrific job every year. I have no idea how the selection process is made but it’s easy to put down Marist, LWC and Lake Central because they were favorites that didn’t get it done.
I prefer to give credit to the schools and players from Oswego, Lockport and Crown Point for their accomplishments. They were clearly the better teams on the given day!
