Grades

Public Service Announcement...

Players and parents, all the hitting lessons in the world aren't going to get you to your highest goals if you don't have THE GRADES.

Been watching some '26 and '27 kids run into roadblocks on this issue... but this is PREVENTABLE.

A 3.5/4 GPA should put you in a good spot for most colleges, unless you're looking at a real academic powerhouse.

Be sure you are setting yourself up for success academically before you waste time posting a 2/4 day at a 14U tournament!

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure...

How does this play out for D3 schools? I know there is no athletic money, so grades are what gets you in, but how much will they give based on grades?

If you have very strong academics the limits to the money are much more than you can imagine. High academics like the UAA and Ivy League use the CSS profile for financial aid. The CSS is easily manipulated if you do your homework, unlike the FAFSA. My student is getting over 250K over 4 years for a division 3 high academic school with less than 10% acceptance rate she got into with good grades and softball skills. She even went test optional.

First things I want to say is that I am not disagreeing with the OP. Just giving a different perspective.

Daughter is a middle infielder. 100% athletic scholarship to a P4 school (ACC). I was somewhat surprised they did not include some academic money in the full scholarship. Daughter has 4.5 GPA.

She went on 4 college visits and was offered two 100% athletic scholarships. The other two Big Ten schools offered 80% athletic scholarships at the college visit. Not one of the schools offered any academic money out of the 4 schools she went on visits to. She was also offered multiple full ride scholarships over the phone but she never went on a visits to those schools.

My kid went to college tuition free. 50% athletic money, 50% academic. So work off the field (grades for those of you in Rio Linda) were just as important as her performance on the field. YMMV

On the other hand ...

My kid was admitted to a Big Ten School with a 23 ACT and 3.0 GPA, it depends how bad they want you. In her defense, she leaned into the academic support they offered and has a degree with real value.

Grades are huge!

Non pitcher D1 daughter and 50% grades and 40% athletic! Makes you extremely desirable and also allows opportunity for school to attract more talent and use money where kids can’t hit that academic standard.

The better academic schools grades are important. There are quite a few that have an over 90% acceptance rate that will take anyone. I say the lower the acceptance rate at the school the more important grades are. Look at Liberty with a %98 acceptance rate. If you can sign the check you are admitted
