It seems likely that this "5 in 5" proposal will pass. As I understand it, this will apply to kids graduating this month (the '26 class), who will now get 5 years to compete in college. It won't offer any retroactive benefit to kids currently in college - so no seniors in college graduating now and come back for another year. (Same with any college freshmen, sophomores and juniors.)
I assume that there will be new lawsuits, but let's assume this format sticks around for a bit...
It does not apply to the 2026 graduates it applies to SA's who are participating in 2026/2027 school year. My understanding is they will need to register for the extra year prior to the start of the 2026/2027 class year. It will hurt high school recruiting for softball since everyone will now have the 5th year opportunity. Maybe they should make high school 5 years. It will definitely impact unrecruited 2027's and 2028's.
According to what we’re being told at the collegiate level it will not apply to this years collegiate seniors who are out of eligibility but it will apply to those still in school with eligibility remaining.
