I've been considering the the aging theory of sudden-function-drop rather than smooth continuous decline which has been the normal way to think of aging.
I saw the plateaus Dorothy was able to stabilize at then, unexpectedly, there would be a rapid decline to another lower functional plateau for time. It was shocking because each plateau generating a new series of actions that we got used to. The plateaus always generated a new type of hope-for-recovery but instead, a few years later, there would be another functional drop.
Diane Keaton's story that I'm reading shows a similar series of stages of functional declines in sudden bursts. There's no news I've seen regarding her covid shots which could have played a role as well. Dorothy never had shots and I got her to 90. At 79, Dorothy was fully functional and really at the top of her game in a way since we did concerts until she was 84 with me.
