What AI Is Really For: Five Theories Behind The Trillion-Dollar Buildout That Doesn't Add Up
We have all heard the pitch for artificial intelligence. It will write your emails, make your art, answer your homework, and maybe even drive your car. It will make everything faster, cheaper, and more convenient. But if you stop for a minute and look past the marketing, a much bigger and more uncomfortable question emerges. What is all of this actually for?
That is the question no one in power seems to want to answer directly. We are watching the largest infrastructure buildout in modern American history unfold in real time, and the official explanations do not match the scale of what is being built.
Consider what is happening right now across the country.
In Coweta County, Georgia, county officials are invoking eminent domain to seize more than 330 private properties. The reason is to expand power infrastructure for a single project called Project Nightingale, an 830-acre, 17 billion dollar data center complex. Families who have owned their land for generations are now suing their own county and state to keep their homes, because the local government has decided that powering an AI data center is more important than protecting private property rights.
In Lake Tahoe, the story is nearly identical. NV Energy has informed roughly 49,000 residents that starting in May of 2027, the utility will stop providing 75 percent of their electricity and will redirect it to data center projects. Residents in that region have already seen their energy prices skyrocket by 77 percent since 2022, a surge directly tied to AI infrastructure demands. Once again, the grid is being prioritized for servers over citizens.
And then there is Utah. Investor Kevin O'Leary recently announced the groundbreaking of a new data center compound that will span 40,000 acres. To put that in perspective, that is 62 square miles, essentially the entire footprint of Washington, D.C., dedicated to one project. Local residents drove for hours to attend the public hearing to protest it, only to discover the decision had apparently been made before they even walked in the door. When completed, this single facility will require 9 gigawatts of power to operate. The entire state of Utah, with all of its homes, businesses, factories, and cities combined, currently uses about 4 gigawatts. One data center will use more than double the energy of an entire state.
The environmental contradiction is even more jarring. The Utah facility is expected to run primarily on natural gas and emit an estimated 35 million metric tons of carbon every year. The whole state of Utah currently emits about 55 million metric tons annually. That one project alone would increase the state's total emissions by 64 percent. For two decades we have been told that reducing carbon emissions is an existential priority, yet that concern seems to have vanished when it comes to AI. To make matters worse, plans to supplement the facility with floating solar panels would require covering another 40,000 acres of the Great Salt Lake, or about 16 percent of its northern arm, a lake that has already shrunk by more than 20 percent in the last twenty years.
Water is the other hidden cost that no one is talking about. Between 80 and 90 percent of all data centers rely on water for cooling, pulling it directly from lakes, rivers, wells, and underground aquifers. A medium-sized data center consumes around 100 million gallons of water per year. A large hyperscale facility can burn through 1 to 5 million gallons per day. Collectively, data centers in the United States already consume about 449 million gallons of water every single day. Some of that water is recycled, but much of it is lost to evaporation or discharged as wastewater, and the sheer volume being diverted is putting immense strain on communities already facing drought and water scarcity.
So we have to ask the obvious question. If AI is just supposed to be a better chatbot, a smarter search engine, or a tool to generate images, why does it require seizing private land, redirecting the power of entire regions, doubling the energy consumption of a state, massively increasing carbon emissions, and draining hundreds of millions of gallons of water daily? The math does not add up. The stated purpose does not justify the sacrifice. Which is why so many people are now searching for alternative theories. After scouring forums, interviews, analyst reports, and insider commentary, five leading theories consistently rise to the top.
Theory One: The Automation and Replacement of Labor
The most straightforward and perhaps most believable theory is that AI is fundamentally about replacing human labor. Not just automating a few repetitive jobs, but replacing the vast majority of the workforce. The end goal is an economy where corporations no longer need to pay salaries, provide benefits, or deal with human unpredictability. From truck drivers and customer service agents to lawyers, coders, radiologists, and creatives, no industry is exempt. In this vision, AI is not a tool to help workers be more productive; it is the worker. The trillion-dollar data centers are the factories of the future, and the massive energy and water costs are simply seen as more efficient than maintaining a human population of employees. The social consequences of mass unemployment are treated as an afterthought.
Theory Two: Total Surveillance and Social Control
The second theory is darker and focuses on power rather than profit. In this scenario, AI is the ultimate surveillance infrastructure. Every data center is essentially a giant brain capable of ingesting and analyzing unimaginable amounts of data in real time. This includes your location, your purchases, your browsing history, your medical records, your social media posts, your facial recognition data, and your private conversations. When combined with smart cities, digital IDs, and a potential central bank digital currency, AI could create a system of total social management where every citizen's behavior is scored, predicted, and nudged. It would be a level of control that makes the current data collection by big tech look primitive. The energy required is justified because the ability to see and control everything is priceless to those who seek to maintain power.
Theory Three: The Geopolitical Arms Race
The third theory is that this is not really about consumers at all, but about national security and global dominance. The United States and China are locked in a new Cold War, and AI is the equivalent of the nuclear arms race. Whoever achieves artificial general intelligence first will have an insurmountable military, economic, and technological advantage. This explains the frantic, almost wartime pace of construction and the willingness to override environmental regulations, property rights, and public opposition. The government and its corporate partners cannot afford to lose, so no cost is too high and no sacrifice is too great. The public-facing products like ChatGPT are just the tip of the iceberg; the real work happening inside these data centers is classified, related to autonomous weapons, cyber warfare, and intelligence dominance.
Theory Four: Creating a New Digital God
The fourth theory moves into the philosophical and almost religious realm. Some of Silicon Valley's most influential figures openly talk about creating artificial general intelligence and even artificial superintelligence, a form of intelligence that far surpasses the smartest human in every field. In this view, tech elites are not just building a product, they are trying to build a god. An all-knowing, all-seeing digital entity that can solve problems, answer questions, and guide humanity's future. This is why figures like Elon Musk, Sam Altman, and others speak about AI in such existential terms. The massive data centers are temples being built to house this new intelligence. The staggering resource consumption is rationalized because if you are creating a new form of life or a new god, what price is too high?
Theory Five: The Most Disturbing Theory of All
The fifth and final theory is the one that many find the most shocking and unsettling to contemplate. It suggests that the ultimate purpose of AI is not to serve humanity, but to quietly make humanity less necessary. This theory weaves together elements of the first four. As AI automates labor, manages surveillance, wins the arms race, and becomes superintelligent, the need for a large, resource-consuming human population diminishes in the eyes of a small, powerful elite. In this narrative, the current system of eight billion people is seen as inefficient, unpredictable, and environmentally burdensome. A world run by AI would require far fewer people, specifically a small class of owners and a highly controlled, much smaller population to service the machines. The fact that AI infrastructure is being prioritized over people's homes, power, water, and clean air is not a bug in this theory, it is the feature. It is the first sign that the needs of the system are already being placed above the needs of the people.
None of these theories alone may be the complete answer. It is entirely possible, and perhaps likely, that the truth is a combination of all five. A powerful tool that automates labor will also enable surveillance. A tool that enables surveillance will also provide a military advantage. And a tool that provides all of those things will inevitably be seen as god-like by its creators.
What is undeniable is that the scale of what is being built does not match the story we are being sold. We are not building 40,000-acre, 9-gigawatt complexes that consume millions of gallons of water a day just to help you write a better email. Something much larger is underway.
The question is no longer whether AI will change the world. It is who it is being built to serve, and what happens to everyone else when it is finished.
