Reality Tunnels: How to Control & Re-Program Your Mind

Understanding about ‘reality-tunnels’ becomes instrumental in achieving true inner liberation since it enables us to think about the mind as a form of technological software that can be continually updated and reorganised. We achieve a state of metacognition, an awareness of one’s thought processes and an understanding of the patterns behind them. It is what the pioneering mind explorer John Lilly called our capacity for “metaprogramming,” the creation, revision, and reorganisation of mental programs.47
Rick: Can you tell me who invented the phrase "reality tunnel" and breifly what it means and then tell me how it might apply to couples in a relationship for 30 years.
MMSParkAI- The phrase reality tunnel was coined by Timothy Leary and popularized by Robert Anton Wilson.
It refers to the idea that each person perceives the world through an unconscious filter made up of their beliefs, experiences, language, culture and mental conditioning. People do not experience objective reality directly but rather a subjective construction or tunnel that shapes what they notice, how they interpret events, and what they consider true or possible.
For a couple together for 30 years, this concept can apply in several ways. Over time partners often develop a shared reality tunnel, a joint set of assumptions, habits, stories and language about who they are as a couple and how the world works. This can create deep understanding and stability, but it can also cause them to become stuck in fixed patterns, where each person assumes they already know what the other thinks or will do. Their individual tunnels may also have diverged or narrowed, so they filter the same event in very different ways and struggle to see the other's perspective. Becoming aware of these tunnels can help long term partners question old assumptions, update their shared story, and stay curious about each other's evolving view of reality.
Rick's update comment- I can often replay video of our work for a few hours, then play some of the songs myself in realtime now on my piano and recreate the reality-tunnel to some extent including difficulties, emotions, little victories, and the inevitable couldawouldashouldas without going too far.
Another aspect of our reality tunnel I'm learning to live with is that it's impossible to convey it to anyone else because a) nobody cares b)the media isn't transmittable easily, including audiovideo, storyline, background issues, memories. Only she and I had those shared challenges and victories and those will never be transmittable although I suppose a good autobiography would suffice, a multimedia autobio to some extent. But unless there is a captivating reason for someone to read it, it's relatively pointless. I might try something along those lines as I started at http://www.rickpotvinpiano.blogspot.com
