The number one question I am asked more than any other is not about whether a grandfather is okay or if a father saw his daughter's wedding day. The question I hear more than anything else is this: What does it actually feel like to die?
Have you ever wondered that? Have you ever lain awake at night and thought about that final moment, what it will feel like, whether there will be pain, fear, loneliness? If you have, you are not alone. It is the question that lives in all of us.
I cannot tell you from personal experience because I have never died. But I have spoken to thousands and thousands of souls on the other side, and almost every single one of them at some point during a reading tells me about their final moments. They tell me what they felt, who they saw, and who was waiting for them. And I am going to tell you right now, it is nothing like what you are afraid of.
In fact, one soul once described it to me in four words that I have never forgotten, and I am going to share those words with you today. By the end of this, I promise you will think about both death and life completely differently.
If you are new here, my name is Matt Fraser. I am known as America's top psychic medium and I am a New York Times best-selling author. I have toured over one hundred cities connecting people with their loved ones on the other side. You may have seen my family on our reality show on E! Entertainment, Meet the Frasers. I have been seeing and hearing spirits since I was a little kid. It runs in my family. My grandmother had this gift, my mom Angela had this gift, and I do too.
In all of my years of doing this work, in all the thousands of readings I have done, the souls that I connect with keep telling me the same things about the moment they died. Over and over. It might be different people, different lives, different ways of passing, but the story is the same. Today I am pulling back the curtain. This is what the dead have told me.
The first and biggest message that spirit gives me constantly is this: The fear of death only exists on this side.
Every soul I have ever connected with, and I mean every single one, tells me that whatever they feared completely disappeared when they crossed over. Not slowly faded, but completely disappeared in an instant.
I once did a reading for a woman whose husband had passed away after a long battle with cancer, and she was tormented by the thought that he had suffered at the end. She could not sleep. She replayed those final days over and over in her head, wondering if he was in pain, if he was scared. When he came through, the first thing he showed me was him taking a deep, full breath. And he said something I will never forget. He said, tell her the pain stayed in the bed. I did not take it with me. The pain stayed in the bed.
That is what they all say in their own way. The body holds onto the illness, the injury, the struggle. The soul does not. When the soul releases from the body, it releases from everything the body was carrying. The soul describes it like taking off a heavy coat that you did not realize you were wearing. For years you carry the weight, the ache, the sickness, and then suddenly it is gone. You feel light again.
This is something that surprises many people. Even souls who passed suddenly tell me the same thing. I am talking about accidents, heart attacks, even tragedies. Many of them tell me that they were lifted out of their body before the moment of impact, before the pain, before anything happened. Spirit has shown me this again and again. God does not let the soul struggle through death. The soul is protected.
So if you are carrying that fear right now, the fear that your loved one suffered in their final moments, I want you to hear this. That image in your head, that is grief talking. It is not the truth. Your loved one wants you to know that they did not take the pain with them. They left it behind.
The second thing the dead have taught me, and I have heard this again and again, is my favorite part of the work that I do. Nobody dies alone. Nobody.
I do not care if someone passed in a hospital at three in the morning with no family around. I do not care if someone was alone in their home and was not found for days. The souls tell me someone came for them every single time. Usually it is the person they loved the most who crossed over before them. A grandmother, a husband, a mother, a grandfather. Sometimes it is someone unexpected. I have had souls come through and tell me they were greeted by their childhood best friend, an old war buddy, or a grandfather they never met in life but recognized instantly when they got to the other side.
If you have ever sat with someone in their final days, you may have already seen this and not realized what it was. Hospice nurses see it constantly. You will notice the dying person looking around the room, staring at a corner, talking to people who are not there, reaching their arms up, saying names of people who passed long ago. The family almost always thinks it is the medication. It is not the medication. That is the welcoming committee. That is the other side arriving before the moment of passing.
Here is what happens. The veil gets thin at the end of life and your loved ones on the other side gather around that bed like family waiting at the airport arrivals gate. I have had souls describe it exactly like that. They said they were all standing there waiting for me like I just got off an airplane.
I did a reading at one of my live shows that has stayed with me. It was a family whose mother had passed away and they were all out of the room. They had stepped out for just about ten minutes to go get coffee and she passed while they were gone. The guilt was eating them alive. They kept saying, we should have been there, we left her alone. When she came through, she laughed. She actually laughed and she said, I waited for you to leave. Her own mother had come for her and she did not want her kids to watch her go. She chose that moment.
So many souls do this. If your loved one passed away the moment you stepped out, that was not bad timing. That was not you failing them. That was a gift they gave you. They did not want you to carry the memory of that last breath. And the hands that actually took them to the other side were the hands of someone who loved them more than anything.
Now let us talk about what the actual moment feels like, because this is what everybody wants to know. Remember at the beginning I told you that one soul described it in four words that I have never forgotten. Here they are. Like coming home exhausted.
He told me it felt like walking through the front door after the longest trip of his life, dropping his bags, sitting down in his favorite chair, and suddenly feeling relief. Familiarity. Home.
That word, home, comes up in every single reading. The souls describe it as going somewhere they instantly know, somewhere they remember. They describe it as returning to a place they had forgotten about, a place they forgot they knew. And they describe it to me over and over in the same way.
Many souls tell me that they hover for a few moments and they actually saw their body below. They saw the room, they saw the family gathered around. They did not feel any pain, but they did feel peace. Some of them tell me they tried to comfort the people crying in the room. They were saying, I am right here, I am okay, I am right here. We cannot hear them, of course, but they are there.
They also describe the light. I know the light sounds cliche, but there is a reason every near death experience, every culture, every religion talks about it. The souls tell me it is not a light that you see so much as a light that you feel. It is warmth, it is love, it is recognition. One woman told me it felt like her body was being wrapped in a big hug. It was not frightening. It was inviting.
And then comes the reunion. These are the faces, the voices, and yes, the pets too. I cannot tell you how many souls come through with the family dog right at their side. Your pets are there. I have seen it in reading after reading. The dog you thought you would never see again is the first one to run to greet them. The cat curled up at their feet. Animals are pure love and they are waiting as well.
What I want you to understand is that death is not an ending. It is a return. It is not falling into darkness, it is walking into light and love. It is not being alone, it is being surrounded by everyone who has ever loved you. It is not pain, it is release.
So if you are grieving right now, if you are afraid for yourself or worried about someone you love who has already passed, I hope you can hold onto this truth that the souls have taught me. Your loved ones are not gone. They are home. They are healed, they are whole, and they are still with you. They did not suffer the way you fear they did. They were not alone for one second. And when it is your turn, you will not be alone either.
You will be greeted with love, you will feel that incredible peace, and you will finally understand what all those souls have been trying to tell me. It feels just like coming home.
