Keep in mind this was only a rough idea of things we may have to offer. Right now, some coaches donít want to fight at all, some just want to see what happens with FB and others just donít care it seems. My goal is to put something together that at least gives us a fighting chance for some sort of season. Relying on another sport to lead the way is IMO a very dumb approach. Some coaches are very content with just not having a season because they donít think anything should change. That sort of laziness and ignorance is exactly why wrestling is an easy target to get dropped or have budgets cut.
This is a much different fight than with club wrestling. Different insurance, different guidelines to follow and different admin we have to deal with. Right now, a private club has an advantage but canít move past phase two guidelines. Schools canít even think about anything until July 1st. The main issue is that we are classified as high risk and really should be moderate with basketball, as should football. We need to change hearts and minds and it will be an uphill battle that we may lose but better than just sitting on our butts in wait and see mode until next year or we will just be left behind. A season lost will devastate our sport long term. Numbers, budgets and admin enjoying not spending money on wrestling, will all be problems. Fact is, if wrestling does somehow return, I could see the Portland schools not returning at all.
