The president should be elected by direct, nationwide popular vote.

That vote should have nothing to do with states whatsoever, nor should the Electoral College exist. The presidency is a national office, in theory not in any way beholden to the states (or equally beholden to them all, if you want to look at it from that perspective). States should have zero control of this election. Obviously in practice that would be complex and expensive to implement, since basically all other elections to office have to be administered on a state or local level. A nationwide presidential election would have to have an entire system of support created. Even if it were to be held via vote-by-mail (or electronically), vastly reducing the manpower needed, it would still be a costly proposition. So it probably will never happen. But it should...
