Unfortunately, it's just a characteristic of VHF radio that it gives much more line of sight rather than the fact that it's DAB . There will always be not spots where Medium and Long wave signals only can reach to any degree. I'm in the far north of Essex near the Suffolk border and can receive all of the Kent DAB stations just on my portable radio as well as those from Suffolk and just about those from Hertfordshire Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire as well.
I've driven around most of Kent in the rural as well as the urban areas and not found any major holes in DAB coverage - same as for here in Essex. The only poor area in Essex is in the far North East of the county around Harwich which gets better coverage from the Suffolk stations as you might expect. Same for FM.
Somebody made the comment above that they have no interest in what the big broadcasting groups think of AM radio and they will continue to use it which is fine as far as I can see as there will be no enforcement action against free/pirate radio stations using Medium wave so experiment to your hearts content.
