"We were sorry to read of the death of Annie Nightingale. Although best known as a BBC broadcaster she was heard earlier on Radio Caroline on adverts like this one for the newspaper she then wrote for, the Daily Sketch. RIP Annie.

Chris Pearson Radio Caroline Facebook page yesterday evening:
Today we lost another radio legend.
A year or so back, I read an interview with her in a Sunday magazine.
In it, Annie talked about how, as a young reporter on the Brighton Argos, she’d watched the Fredericia sailing past, broadcasting en route to Ramsey to set up Caroline North.
In the article, Annie talked about wanting to swim out and ask for a job as she loved Radio Caroline.
She went on to be Radio’1’s first female DJ and was still broadcasting there in December.
After I read the article, I contacted Annie’s agent to see if she’d like to ‘scratch that itch’ and join us aboard the Ross Revenge for a Caroline North weekend.
Plans progressed and then Annie’s health wasn’t so good. We told her to let us know when she felt up to it and then come and join the crew.
Sadly, it was never to be.
R.I.P. Annie Nightingale

She talked elsewhere about applying for a dj job on Radio Caroline but being turned down. Like the original pirates, at that time they had a policy of 'no petticoats aboard'.
She would have been a great dj on Caroline or Radio 1 in the 60s, and it is a shame that she was rejected by both because of her sex.
