No. HD radio hangs on the back of FM and AM analogue radio on a sub-currier which can be decoded by a suitable receiver but is ignored my a standard analogue FM/AM radio so is on the same frequencies. As you might expect, you can't get such a high quality (bitrate) digital stream on the back an AM station due to the limited bandwidth although it does still have the advantage of greater range on Medium wave. As with all things digital, when you get to the fringes of reception the HD signal will break up and become corrupted rather than just getting a bit noisy.
It's possible to hang more than one HD signal on the back of an FM station. Some carry up to three bit the second or third ones if used are of lower sound quality than the primary HD channel.
You might hear Americans referring to HD1, HD2 or HD3. These are the first, second and third HD signals if used.
Although it uses the same bands as FM and AM radio so doesn't waste any spectrum, HD radio has never become especially popular in the US even though most car radio's support it over there.
