Asking myself what our expanding universe might be expanding into, I conclude that "nothing" is not acceptable. There must be something, even if it is an infinite void without matter or substance and defined only by abstract mathematical rules. Until science finds evidence of something else, this is the best my imagination can conjure.
I am reminded of a movie called "The 13th Floor", where a long drive out into the desert eventually leads to the edge of the simulation, where it fades into a featureless topological grid. Even if the Earth we live on is not like this, our universe might be. Our universe might be infinitely detailed, yet matter as we know it might be finite in extent, fading beyond visual range into mathematical abstraction, the larger infinity.
