I finally purchased a Tesla about 3 weeks ago ago. It came with a free 3 month trial of "Full Self-Driving". I experimented with it for few hours. Here are some of the issues I noticed:
1) Sometimes it's too timid and slow. It brakes when it doesn't need to. This might cause impatient drivers to make unsafe passes.
2) It can't read and understand the words on traffic signs. If it sees a sign like "No Parking 4-6 PM", it will not realize that means cars will be parked there at other times.
3) It is too slow to react to pedestrians jaywalking across the street. Someone walked across the street in front of us, and the car waited too long to apply the brakes, then had to brake hard, then waited too long to accelerate after the pedestrian crossed.
4) On a narrow road in a cemetery, it thought the speed limit was 25 MPH. In my judgement, that was a 15 MPH or 10 MPH zone.
5) In that cemetery, it came up to tree shadows on the road. The shadows confused it, and it slowed to about 2 MPH.
6) Making a right turn from a side street to a busy street, it was extremely slow. Impatient drivers would have honked or made an unsafe pass.
7) On a curving freeway onramp, it came to a patch of wet mud and did not slow down.
8) On the freeway it decided to move into the far left lane while going at the speed limit. That was too slow for that lane, I took control and moved over to prevent other drivers from passing unsafely on the right.
9) I know these cars are not able to understand and obey voice commands from police officers.
10) On a wide street with 3 lanes in each direction, it decided to move into the far right lane before a section where the road curved to the right. The right lane was a parking lane. It came to up to a parked car and stopped. I took control and waited for a bunch of cars to pass before I could safely move around the parked car.
11) It was slow to react to a truck in front of us that suddenly veered a few inches into our lane. I took control without waiting to see how long it would take the Tesla to react.
It also did do a lot of things right, but that's not what this post is about. A human who drives well most of the time and crashes 1% of the time would be a very bad driver.
