Brian I remember the reason at the time that council houses were really sold off, was because very few people were paying their rent. Perhaps it was encouraged by some councils that hated Mrs Thatcher. As I remember my mother like millions of others thought it was very important to pay your rent, but things seemed to change in later years , long after she died of course. I remember a young girl I worked with, she was involved with a West Indian lad from London. She left work to join him. She told us you can just break into a council boarded up flat and live there. The Labour councils didn’t bother collecting rents. That was in the 1980’s. That was another reason, why the councils were not allowed to use the money from the sale of the houses to build new ones as she thought it would be back to square one. I don’t agree it was a good idea, but I see the reason why it was done.
