It is a GrII listed church, opened in 1888 and designed by Newcastle architect 26yrs old Charles Walker. It was built by Jarrow builder Thomas Lumsden and much Irish
Labour. The brick came from 5 local brickworks as I discovered when examining the courses just above ground level. Strange but they were all different sizes and yet the wall became level on higher courses. They did not come from Denwick Quarry as once written. The sandstone pillars may have done. The pews were again documented as come from Geo.Clarke at Hartlepool but he only supplied the Pine and John Gallagher of Newcastle made 38 of them along with the pulpit, altar and rails. I calculated the roof at 13 tons to help aquire a grant for repairs which they got. As for the 100 x 50 land it stands on, we can thank the Ellison family who owned it. It cost £5000 to build which is why the bell tower was never built. As for Walker's original sketch, it was assumed to be lost but wrongly as it has hung on the vestry wall for over 100 years!
