We're told they were disobedient, so they were killed.
Were they? Really disobedient? How did they know? Had the "word of God" reached them? Were they to be held to the impossible standard of Mosaic law that Jesus came to bear? Was David's captain disobedient? What disobedience justifies being killed by God? If God was so powerful He could destroy all by natural disaster (flood) why then did He order patriarchs to assemble armies to murder for possession of land? Those questions are why I believe the OT is a history of how we, humanity, screwed up the image of God. Some people continue to screw it up.
