That was the bottom line for me.
God is unlimited, bound by nothing (so it is claimed). It therefore follows that it was his decision that the only way to 'forgive' humans was through the blood sacrifice of an innocent. Why the violence? Why the brutality? How could an all-merciful, all-loving god find appeasement in the torture and butchery of an innocent? The question of 'why do we suffer' just helped to weaken that bottom line (that eventually feel out). How human 'sin' causes a tsunami and the drowning death of its victims plus the subsequent suffering of its survivors is beyond me.
