and his troops joined the 54th for the rest of the war. From the records it’s pretty clear he’d have been promoted to major or even ltcol and kept his troops as a separate regiment but given his brother was killed at Gettysburg and pressure from being a newlywed (out g g grandmother might have been pregnant) he turned that chance down.
