The expiring enlistments in the summer of 64 is really something
They knew they had another campaign season before getting out. Some reenlisted during the winter to get a furlough home, thinking they might be killed that spring either way so might as well see the folks one more time. Other regiments marched right off the field in the middle of Cold Harbor, as their terms expired just days before the fateful charge. And then the whole thing about whether the three year term started when they joined state service or officially mustered in. Difference of a week would make a huge impact.
