My parents had a milder form of it - the general notion that things ‘were better off’ when black Americans lived ‘over there’ and ‘we whites’ lived ‘over here.’ Never mind that, as I came to realize, the white people ‘over here’ had most of the stuff. And that if more manufacturing went in, or a new freeway, it tended to go through the ‘black part of town.’ Only they didn’t call it that, it was a ‘disadvantaged area’ or a ‘slum.’

And those schools, colleges and libraries were somehow ‘disadvantaged,’ too. Just not as good as ‘ours.’

You seem to sort of grasp this, and some factors that led to the slump - bad government policies, drugs, continued racism, and problems with the family. That last one is worse than ever today - and add rap ‘music’ to that. And guns.

At least it was a thoughtful commentary. More of that would be better.
