Indulge an old skool radiophile. If you paid attention to this sort of thing, does anyone remember the dominant AM stations in the market and what they played back in the 70s?
I'll answer first.
Greenville SC
1440 WQOK was the long time Top 40 outlet
1330 WFBC played what was Call Middle of the road (MOR), now called soft AC.
660 (in Dixie) and 1260 were the two country outlets. But they were daytimers and signed off at night.
1490 was a full service type format in the day and at night would play country. Others would tune into 650 WSM at night.
1070 WHYZ (The Wiz) served the black community
Spartanburg SC:
910 WORD was the long time Top 40 outlet, even into the 80s.
1400 AM, I do not recall the call letters, was the country outlet.
950 WSPA was the MOR outlet
1530 WASC was the black station, but had to sign off at night.
Anderson SC:
1280 WANS was the longtime rocker in the market. Sadly they're off the air now.
1230 WAIM had a full service-MOR type of deal.
People in Anderson would tuned in to 660 AM in Greenville for country. WESC had a 50,000 watt signal providing city grade coverage, even in the SE parts of the County.
1020 AMwas and still is bluegrass and Gospel
1390 AM WHPB played country and gospel.
Charlotte NC:
610 WAYS Big WAYS was the decades long Top 40 powerhouse. They routinely topped clear channel WBT in the ratings
In the 70s, 1110 WBT played what would today be labeled Hot AC.
1480 WAME (Whammy) was the long time country outlet. 1310 tried to compete but only had daytime authorization.
1240 was broadcasting religious programming in the 70s. Back in the Mid 50s to late 60s, they were a successful Pop- top 40 station WIST. But 610 had a much better signal
930 had been MOR, Full service. By the late 70s WSOC would be the one of the Carolinas first News Talk stations. It didn't last. Now 930 is WYFQ, the flagship station of the BBN
1600 WGIV played soul and R&B, so did 1540 Ripple WRPL. 1540 had to sign off at night, 1600 had nighttime authorization.
Those are the markets I can speak for. What say Y'all
