In the 70s, it was 93.7 WFBC. They ran the Drake-Chenault Hits Parade format successfully for years. Then 107.3 WANS started local Top 40 programming and ended dominating the genre in the 80s. Both stations had 100,000 watt signals and had regional coverage. WAIM Rock 101 was the upstate AOR outlet
Spartanburg had no early FM rocker which is one reason 910 WORD survived playing Top 40 up until the Mid 80s. People would eventually switch to the previously referenced FMs and those from Charlotte.
Now Charlotte's original FM Rocker was 95Q WROQ. In the late 70s, 107.9 would ditch instrumentals to Compete with 95Q. By 1980, the now WBCY would go straight top 40.
Other smaller market stations I remember playing CHR, WCRS Z96 Greenwood. WXIK K96 out of Shelby NC. WXRC out of Hickory ran Tapemasters Stereo Rock in the 80s format, so did WRIX 103.1 out of Honea Path (Anderson SC). WDZK 99.3 out of Chester SC ran at Hot AC Top 40 hybrid.
