My objections to Trump's actions in this matter lie not with that particular goal but with the unsuitability of National Guard forces for the role: these aren't mass riots or suchlike...they are individual crimes that law enforcement personnel are vastly better suited to address.

And the optics are absolutely dreadful. Given so many other actions by this administration that can be not-unreasonably viewed as autocratic power-grabs (in terms of the usual separation of powers), how can this not look like preparation to seize military control of the capital?
