We haven't the surplus, in blood or treasure, to eliminate every potentially significant threat at once. Certainly not the latter commodity, particularly when the direct cost (how many billion is it now?) pales into insignificance compared to the overall global economic damage looming from the closure of the Strait. And certainly not with a poorly-planned "first strike" made w/o consultation with our allies (except Israel, of course) that has left us with only a single ally in the operation.

No sane person would miss Iran's current repressive, terror-exporting regime. But that regime's still "current," still dangerous enough to continue interdicting shipping at a critical choke point, and is probably far more committed to continue resisting than it was before. It's proven to be a very resilient "hydra" when it comes to using decapitation strikes. I don't see any plausible path to regime change there that doesn't include massive "boots on the ground" numbers, something we can't really afford right now, which would have severe ramifications to our readiness in other parts of the world (against vastly more capable potential enemies), and which the majority of Americans don't support.

This is looking to be an absolutely disastrous decision, to be frank.
