I'm fine with that, too. Breaking the current continental US into between 6 and 8 regional polities would be the best outcome, if we can pull it off. Not all the way down to individual states (except possibly California): many are only dubiously viable in terms of sustaining an economy as an independent nation.

The country probably won't be that lucky, though. A dissolution that involves bloodshed and destruction is more "the American way," I fear.
