Better then now, but still too much just memory by rote as though there was only one right answer. We were not taught to think and question what were being told. This often meant that we believed what were told to us as automatically being the truth.

That was more than useful for politicians and government. People who can both think for themselves and question are dangerous to both politicians and government as well as the media and businesses.
