I remember in the early 60's when I was offered a Ford V8 Pilot for practically nothing and it looked to be in splendid shape considering.
My neighbour who was an American air force mechanic told me not to take it because 'those damn things are nothing but trouble and will suck gas like you wouldn't believe.'
I have never liked side valve engines anyway, the wartime BSA 350's were notorious for overheating and my Ford van was another example that needed nursing and radiator top up on a long run.
Mind you they were easy to decoke - good thing too!
