The corporations that own the plant are also the freight haulers and have been very successful at it over the last four decades or so after being deregulated.
The passenger entities are the government one, Amtrak, and the various local commuter authorities run on the state level. Though mostly running on the freighthauler's plant both the national and state level passenger entities own the plant over which they operate in the areas of highest density, especially in the northeast of the country.
The national network is very sparsely covered between the two metropolitan corridors, and the costs to travel by rail are hideous, especially to travel in any comfort.
The olden days of rail travel are long gone here, though freight haulage is now more profitable and efficient than it was then.
Air travel here is a death march, especially regional air travel. I can no longer do it just because of the extreme discomfort with my spine. That only leaves the automobile, which can be its own kind of death-march when distances are easily measured in the kilo-miles.
