Bob Watt was fascinated by George's story about the missing Charles and even more absorbed by his first quick perusal of the notes.''"I say George, you know who we need to ask for his opinion? Remember that bright youngster Arthur who was mad about space travel?
What was his name...Clarke, I think it was...he was very helpful with the whole radar business, very energetic and enthusiastic chap, he'd have been caught up with these ideas of Charles, mark my words. Offhand I can't think of anyone more suitable to aid us."
George noted how Bob Watt had already assumed it was a team project that was facing them and his suggestion of Clarke made him wonder why the young man hadn't come to his mind immediately.
Some of the older men involved in the wartime research had made jokes about Clarke's obsession with space travel but no one questioned his abilities and it was his curiousity that led him to the sort of thinking outside the box that had led to his implementation of Ground Controlled Approach that had proved so vital during the Berlin Airlift in 48-49 and saved many lives from the catastrophic crashes that would otherwise have inevitably occurred .
"Is there anyone else you think we should include on the team?" said Bob
"No let's wait until we need some specific expertise, too many cooks spoil the broth" said George
"Your son seems to have grasped a lot of concepts that even advanced mathematicians find troublesome. I think our best course is to divide the task into sections and test as we go because I cannot see how any one of us can go it alone. There's too much knowledge implied but not stated.
At first glance I would venture to guess that a simple wiring error may have caused his apparatus to experience such a surge of power that it melted the electromagnets coils.
I know what you'll say when I suggest this but I cannot for the life of me work out where that power surge originated. The closest thing would have been a lightning strike but this lab is properly grounded I take it so that only leaves one other possibility.
We have all been avoiding the issue but its obvious to me that the hole in the wall you saw, which was almost immediately repaired as if nothing had happened means that the force which did the damage and almost certainly took Charles as well was external, indeed not of this world.
Laugh if you want but I see no other rational explanation" concluded Arthur.
