Das Boot was a pretty brutal, and from what I’ve read, accurate portrayal of the war in the Atlantic. Life-expectancy of a U-boat crewman was probably similar to that of a WW1 fighter pilot...pretty darn short. Tactics and tech definitely shifted broadly to the Allied side by 1943. Heading out to challenge it seemed pretty suicidal in the later years of the war.
I have an effort at fiction that I started many years ago which has languished on a thumb-drive. Maybe some day I’ll pick it up again, but I think that is a tough prospect. A lot of my thoughts and plot line I’d have to reorient myself to. Hopefully it’s all relatively clear in your head and reproducible in some form.
