Gotta respect a man with more than one talent! Theatre, cars, machining/engineering...
My wife read each Potter book as it came out; the genre suited her as she was a big Dungeons & Dragons type in college. My son was of the age when Potter was woven into his childhood. I read the first few books to him in chunks at bedtime (the only reason I became familiar with the lot) and he read the last few to me, though there was one in the middle that I'd read a chapter one night, then he'd read to me the next.
The deal was, once he read the book he could see the film when it came out. Motivated him in his reading and made the films less a scare at his age all at the same time. It was a win for everyone and I learnt to enjoy them as much as he and Memsahib did.
The attempt at a sequel series is utter crap, however.
