Not to mention situational awareness, something American drivers as a whole are unskilled and unschooled in. This alone makes American drivers arguably the worst in the world, in my experience. Nothing like combining a sense of personal superiority with a complete lack of training to create utter unpredictability.
My real bitch about all these driver aids is the need for the controls to be power driven in order to implement them. ABS and "accident avoidance" systems mean you need power brakes. Stability controls and lane holding technology mean power steering a requirement. This costs me any feel through the controls; no tactile feedback. Throw in all the added weight for airbags, crash-proofing, &c, and a modern car cannot help but be a wallowing pig with all the charm of an appliance and no driver stimulation and participation whatsoever.
They might just as well make them autonomous, in my view. There are no modern vehicles worth my time to drive anymore.
