Especially with something I'm passionate about, I initially will take a critique as a criticism. I'll defend what I produce and how I produced it invariably, citing my logic on how I came to some conclusion or another in defence of the "why"; it's all very powerful and impassioned.
It's only after a period of time (long enough for the competition to be over perhaps) that I'll objectively revisit the discussion or debate. Very often I then find myself in agreement with the other person's position. "Of course that makes sense!"
After the first spirited defence (is it my ego, perchance?) I find myself re-evaluating and many times that calm reflective assessment has me to accept the other person's suggestion and implement it, quite often for the better.
Many are the times when I'll tell someone to ignore that initial resistance and continue to state their case, then give me a day or two.
