As soon as you start breathing on these engines to get a little more enthusiasm from them, they start finding other places to vent, like at the dipstick or notoriously at the near-side rear corner of the headgasket.
Mine are vented in a classic manner from the '70s ( and probably before). The other common issue is often identified by hobbiests as "vapour-lock" and they then proceed to address the fault with some procedure or another gleaned off the car forums usually involving aluminium foil hats. As it turns out, nine times of ten or better, the issue is the barely adequate mechanical fuel pump starting to wear or the diaphragm is going.
I ritualistically excised the mechanical pump on every 1200 or 1500 I ever campaigned and still do it. A nice electric back in the boot and Robert is your Mum's sibling.
Then, a blanking plate to cover the hole where that horrid cam-driven pump was, a hole conveniently in the lower case that can now be vented by adding a stand-pipe up to head level whose free end is adorn with a lovely filter-cap or dumps into a catch-can.
Two birds with one stone; well-vented lower case so the scrutineers are happy you aren't leaking oil on the track and nice reliable fuel delivery in all climates.
All this just for fun...
