I have to wonder whether the hardened seats really are a requirement for such a thing, not turning very fast, fixed RPMs, (most importantly) low compression, pretty constant load and pretty low-used mechanically compared to a four-cycle multicylinder automotive engine or a variable speed and load application such as a bike. I don't know; more the speculation of an old mechanical engineer type, especially considering the sometimes crappy stuff they were expected to burn.
I used to play with old Model A Fords, big four-pot slow-turning engine with bags of torque, didn't care what it burned as long as you set the spark correctly. They were intended to burn anything from seriously low-octane sludge to faerie-piss. Wonderful things, they were. Those old low-compression engines were never so finicky about lead/octane. Still, a musing more than any authoritative knowledge.
I think the real concern and where the trouble starts is petrol cut with ethanol. Carbs just hate the jelly that can gather in odd places using that stuff on only an occasional basis rather than in regular use and its notoriously brutal on rubber hoses and seals.
I'm looking forward to watching this!
