When Timmy asked her about Mouse the house brownie, she told him where to locate the right book in Charles' study.

"I'm too busy to answer your questions lad," she brusquely replied "you are ready to start finding things out for yourself and Charles has given his permission for you to use his library but be warned, don't you start exploring until one of us knows what you're searching for, some of those books will read you given half a chance!"

The volume stood out from all the others by virtue of its intense black cover with the title WICKEDNESS in bright red on the spine. When Timmy put his hand upon it he immediately sensed the dark vibrations it emanated as he opened it and began to read:-

Common portrayals include furry, reptilian, or even bat-like forms, sometimes with wings, and they are agile and quick, allowing them to cause trouble unseen.

PISKIES are a type of mythical creature from folklore, particularly associated with the South Western regions of Brythan. They are often described as small, mischievous spirits that can be helpful or a nuisance,

LEPRECHAUNS are small, solitary, and mischievous fairies , who hoard gold. Traditionally, they are depicted as wizened, old men with specific attire that varies by region. They are known for playing tricks and are also associated with good or bad luck and a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.

BROWNIE is a good-natured type of hobgoblin that is said to inhabit houses and to come out at night while the owners of the house are asleep and perform various chores and farming tasks, especially milking the cows, churning butter and cleaning.

Having a Brownie live with you is thought to bring prosperity. However, when inhabiting houses and homesteads, they do not like to be seen, spending the day hiding in the remote recesses of the home, and working only during the hours of darkness, accepting small gifts and food in return .

This is an important point to understand if a Brownie comes to stay, as they work for the joy of it, and are said to abandon the house, taking prosperity with them, if they are given gifts of blankets or clothing, or they perceive that they are being bribed, rewarded or paid a fee for the work that they do.

GOBLIN is a small, grotesque, monstrous humanoid creature. They are ascribed conflicting abilities, temperaments, and appearances ranging from mischievous household spirits to malicious, bestial thieves. They often have magical abilities similar to a fairy such as the ability to shapeshift.

What's the difference between a goblin and a hobgoblin?

HOBGOBLIN tends to be more of a playful troublemaker. A hob is a type of household or land spirit , often described as a brownie or hobgoblin that can be both helpful and mischievous.

These secretive, nocturnal creatures were believed to live in or near homes and farms, performing chores in exchange for food or offerings, but they could also play tricks or cause mischief if offended. A key characteristic is that a hob should never be given clothing as a gift, as this was believed to cause the helpful spirit to leave.

GNOMES are primarily guardians of the earth and its treasures, seen as protectors of nature who live underground and possess knowledge of minerals, plants, and hidden wealth. They are often depicted as small, wise, bearded beings who ensure the balance of nature, guide miners to valuable ores, and are associated with good luck and the fertility of the land.

Similar creatures include dwarves, duendes, and kobolds, but it is also commonly used as a blanket term for all small, fay creatures'

"Makes me wonder whether all these types are simply different witnesses descriptions of the same creature?" mused Timmy aloud as he replaced the book on its shelf.
