Memorial Day weekend here, the traditional kick-off for the summer season, and my friends living over in the Maryland/Delaware beach communities tell me it was a ghost-town. Weather was lousy, but me thinks the sorry state of the economy has more to do with it.

We have a long-running Memorial Day tradition of parading here in this town I live in, but I haven't attended in years. The folks falling over themselves with their one-day-per-year "Thank for your service" schtick has become oppressive (read obnoxious). I think we could do a bit better than that, really.
