Not the man/woman in the street that's for sure.

I have noticed this gradual creep of AI in, as I once previously mentioned, music creation and also in my small corner of the world retro computing.

The retro forums I inhabit in this regard have many smart cookies amongst their throng who over the years have created new original games and programs for the platform of choice.

So far so good.

Now when new wares are paraded on the forums there is the hesitant (at first) admission that AI was used to help with certain aspects of the job, save time etc. This has now gone to the wall insofar as now folk are fully admitting to the entire creation being AI based with only the idea/title of the project suggested by a human.

This has led to a slew of back and forth comments on the forums, some for AI and at the moment most against.

So what who cares? It's only a niche computer forum what's the big deal?

I believe the deal is many fold. If one is going to sacrifice creative endeavour on such a small platform and in time have the entire forum in lockstep with AI acceptance then by dint of logic this will then extrapolate to much wider issues, such has health diagnosis, governmental decisions, the decision to go to war etc.

It is one thing for those of us of a certain vintage to shake our fists at clouds over AI because we were conceived in another time, but what about those who are being brought up to young adult hood and also those yet unborn who will sit cheek by jowl with all this as they develop?

Because they know of nothing else they will regard AI and all its little minions as the new "norm" and old fogies such as we will be left to eke out our remaining life span as best we can in this brave new world whilst the youth of the day metaphorically pat us on the head and say, "get with the plan gramps"

The argument I keep hearing is "Well what about all the other inventions that man has created for the betterment of the species, is that no different to AI as a tool?"

This argument may have some merit but in my view whilst some of man's creations may have made us slightly more physically lazy, or easy option choosing by nature, I don't see them as destroying one main aspect of humanity, that of independent creative thought.

When one looks back at history and see the marvellous worlds of art,music,literature et al on can see the human handprint on it all regardless of the tools used to fashion it, tools being the operative word. A tool used by a human hand has no thoughts of its own, no cognisance at all and should be merely the interlocutor between creator and his/her creation.

AI by way of its nature would seek to replace creative endeavour, would no longer be a "dumb" tool which only shines when wielded by a skilled artisan, but would in fact want to replace the original spark that should be only be in the purview of a human being and not dwell in the realm of the "smart" hammer."

Today we let it create music, you-tube is flooded with such dreck in all musical genres, fooling a vast swathe of the populace into thinking the video poster is the new Mozart such is the "excellence" of the composition.

The speed at which all this has taken place is frightening.

So for now the novelty or as I prefer it the banality of computer program/games and music being the start of it. What happens when we trust it enough to have its electronic hand on the big red button?

You or I may be of a generation to say not a chance in a million old son, but what about the president or prime minister yet unborn? If they be of the AI trusting sort who are brought up happy to trust it's diagnoses of gout on their last doctors visit what's to stop them trusting it concerning the possible annihilation of life on earth?
