Now, I admit having a well equipped workshop for both cars and model-making, so guilty as charged perhaps.
A person who knows the workings of, say, a watch and can navigate his way through a repair or rebuild by skill and experience gets my respect to a large degree. Where it erodes, though, is when its quite obvious they have the wherewithal to just chuck parts at the dingus rather than repair the broken bit. It's a modern first-world mentality pretty much because parts availability and resources to buy parts are taken for granted. The guy whose vid started this thread probably threw another kilo-Euro at those OEM parts from Omega he was unwrapping; he doesn't say and I'm not at all surprised he didn't mention it.
We no longer seem to to either be able or want to be bothered to make a new bit on the lathe or mill, rewire even so much as a lamp, or change out a u-joint rather than bolt up a new prop-shaft because they are only "sold as an assembly".
Then I watch something like the vid you posted with the two guys in Vietnam rebuilding that old Chinese diesel engine outdoors and I just smile at the fact they haven't lost the plot. Funny how many "replace the parts" guys from first world countries commented on how they were doing it wrong and what hacks they were.
The commenters wouldn't last a day in a forward area like the Western Desert or New Guinea keeping Hurries or Tomahawks flying during WWII. We used to be able to do that as a culture.
As soon as I hear a voice say, "Oh, hell I can fix that good as new!" coming from some a mechanic as he wanders over to the bench, then I know we "got sumpin'".
The vertigo is chronic but not constant. It comes when my sinus' clog up, might have been caused from when I was riding a Hercules with an ear infection which in itself was very unpleasant. After all the altitude and pressure changes, someone told me, "You have blood coming out your ear." Apparently I blew the eardrum out in the process.
I can't fly airplanes and gliders because of the unpredictability of the onset of vertigo. Pisses me off...
GRIN!
