J and her little family went to Costa Rica in late February. It was awesome there, but in their 10 days there, they quickly learned NOT to mention being from America when asked. The exceedingly polite chill that ensued even after friendly conversations was obvious to them immediately.

K went with 2 close friends to Japan in March for the 2025 Star Wars convention, sight seeing, and to visit the Grandparents of one friend who is a native, Japanese American. They all learned quite quickly to NEVER mention America, even as the Japanese are incredibly polite and did all they could not to SHOW their disdain for America. However, the immediate, tiny, giveaway reactions couldn't be completely hidden when encountering native Japanese and other travelers. They got it right away and never mentioned it again, implying they were Canadian if they couldn't ignore polite inquiries from others.

So, take that for what little it is worth and ask others for their experiences to decide. If you still go, ENJOY! Just don't mention where you're from, just in case.
