Edited by Pikes Peak 14115 on November 3, 2025, 5:12 pm The song shifts on that moment to something sad, bitter, and profound. The "for God so loved the world" motif begins in C major, measure 3. then changes to the b diminished minor 7th with C in the bass. It is bitter. Its resolution in measure 4 to the C9 still has an aftertaste of dissonance. The fmsus in measure 5 is a new flavor of bitter dissonance, followed by an e diminished minor 7th which propels the movement forward into a deeper twist of dissonance. The fm9 in measure 6 is a slight release of the tension, but the fminor key is even more profoundly sad. Not in an ugly way, because this is pure dissonance. Voiced any differently, it would sound ugly and hideous. Measure 7 is the bitter b dminishied minor 7th, but with G in the bass. Even more profoundly sad and bitter, setting up the words "That He gave His one and only Son" cminor G bass in measure 8, #gdiminished diminished 7th with G in the bass measure 9- even more hurt, pain, tension, wrenching bitterness, and where it should resolve in measure 10, harmony shifts to an #f diminished diminished 7th against the G in the bass in the most profane and profound possible comparison of good and evil side by side in the harmony and it melody. Measures 11 - 14 hint of peaceful resolution in G major. But the melody is in c minor, and that contrast makes it profoundly sad. Then in measure 16 shifted to a flatted deceptive cadence- meaning the pain will go on in a new way, and it does. Measurfe 17 resolves in c minor with bitter minor 2nd in the melody. Measure 21 resolves in C major, suddenly feeling peaceful, and its cadence in G major in measure 22. But then in measure 23 the whole thing begins again, this time with the words and voices. Repetition like this is music's exclamation point.
The harmonic rhythm is very simple and unremarkable. The progression has been used in countless other songs. Those harmonies have essentially no dissonance, and where the singer sounds like he is both angry, and in agony, the lack of dissonancedoesn't support that.
It is easy to make dissonance sound terrible or bad. It takes very careful skill to make it sound profound, ironically sad, gentle and agonizingly beautiful.
For God so lovewd the world. One of the favorite and most often quoted verses in religion.
It begins in C major. But we know what's coming. In measure 2 rather than a dominant chord, the harmony is a b diminished minor 7, and that bA adds to a tension of the diminished chord.
Measure 23 in the b diminished minor 7. Then the same theme as before, with the words, and a second voice in the flute. The flutes legato arpeggios in measures 28 and 29 become staccato in measure 30, intensifying the sadness and tension of the words, but in a profoundly gentle and beautiful, but nervous way. Is resolves with "shall not perish" and "shall have eternal life." Which appears with a peace only made possible by the tension and dissonance before it.
This is achieved purely by harmony and melody. If we add the singer- that voice can't be gutteral and agonized with "cool sounding" drop offs of words.
I did not say that" could use some of this care in the harmony and melody. The song could be tweaked to have that. But it also tells a significant portion of Jesus' story and perhaps his disappointment in having to teach the lessons again to a crowd who just doesn't get it.
That's where the anger could really enhance it. That would employ carefully voiced dissonance to reflect the anger.
If we do it, I will do that to it.
Use of such a message could be directed to Trump and Johnsin who clearly use Christianity and Jesus to anger the base, not against Jesus' enemies, but Trumps enemies.
For this to work requires two key elements. First is a person who has absolutely no respect for any of Jesus' parables, lessons, and examples, and a base of people too stupid to not see the clearly blasphemous abuse.
Much of the American religious right is a mob of fools. They have been duped by this man, and are too stupid to see or know it.
They need to see side by side comparisons. I believe a photo or five of the fifty year old coward slob dancing in a club with a mob of half naked teen age girls might accomplish that. But he is protected by a pious false Christian liar, Mike Johnsin who absolutely does NOT reflect or represent the teachings of the Jesus he so frequently mentions. Trump did in real life what he and his son monitor each other for the sins of imagery potentially on their phones.
You can look away from a painting, but you can't listen away from a symphony![]()
